Tucked along the peaceful An Cuu River in Hue, An Dinh Palace is a hidden gem that captures over a century of royal elegance, artistic finesse, and cultural fusion. If you’re into heritage travel or just love a good story told through architecture, this place is your kind of magic.

A Royal Hideaway with a European Twist

Built in 1917 by Emperor Khai Dinh during his days as Crown Prince, An Dinh Palace later became the home of Emperor Bao Dai and his family after his abdication. Though time and war have left their marks, the essence of this royal residence still lingers—graceful, grand, and oh-so-Hue.

The palace originally featured 10 structures across over 23,000 square meters, including a wharf, main gate, garden, theater, and more. Today, three buildings remain: the Main Gate, Trung Lap Pavilion, and the heart of it all—Khai Tuong Tower.

Step Into Art from a Century Ago

The Main Gate is a classic example of Nguyen Dynasty architecture, with vibrant ceramics and a two-tiered design. Just past it is the Trung Lap Pavilion, a beautiful octagonal structure housing a life-size bronze statue of Khai Dinh, cast in 1920.

Then comes the showstopper: Khai Tuong Tower—a three-story masterpiece inspired by European architecture. Think ornate balconies, intricately carved woodwork, and hand-painted murals of Vietnamese landscapes. “Khai Tuong” means “auspicious beginnings,” and the design certainly lives up to its name.

Inside, walls, ceilings, and columns are covered in detailed decorative motifs, blending Vietnamese tradition with French flair. Some murals were once hidden or damaged by time but are now being carefully restored, bringing the space back to life.

A Walk Through Royal Gardens

Behind the main building lies a spacious courtyard with two large ponds, a charming garden, and a European-style fountain at its heart. The scene feels straight out of a royal fairy tale—perfect for a quiet stroll or dreamy photoshoot.

From the garden, look up at the grand balcony where rooftop feasts may have once taken place. It’s not hard to imagine royal banquets under the stars in this very spot.

Why You Should Visit

Today, An Dinh Palace is a favorite for both tourists and locals, many dressed in traditional attire to capture the old-world charm. But it’s more than just a pretty backdrop—it’s where East meets West, where history breathes through art, and where you can feel the quiet dignity of the Nguyen Dynasty.
