“Xanh xanh đỏ đỏ vàng vàng.
Cứ đến tháng Chạp cả làng làm hoa”
“Green, red, yellow, and bright – every December, the village crafts flowers.”
This folk rhyme captures the essence of Thanh Tien, a village where everyone is an artisan, but only for one month each year. In December, the humble farmers with their skilled hands create vibrant paper flowers that bloom year-round, through all four seasons.

Located in the peaceful Thanh Tien fields in Phu Mau Commune, Phu Vang District, about an hour’s ride from Hue city center, this village has been preserving its tradition of paper flower crafting for over 400 years.
In the past, Thanh Tien’s paper flowers were a common sight during Lunar New Year, gracing altars as offerings of prosperity and good fortune. Legend has it that during the reign of Emperor Gia Long, the village presented a unique multi-colored flower as a symbol of virtue, with the central golden flower representing the wise ruler and five surrounding petals symbolizing key values: Humanity, Ritual, Integrity, Wisdom, and Trust. Impressed by the flower’s symbolism, the emperor encouraged the village to continue crafting these flowers, spreading their beauty throughout Hue and beyond.

Although the tradition of making paper flowers has faced challenges, particularly with the rise of industrial decorations, a few families still keep the craft alive. One artisan family I met has evolved the craft, using better materials and dyes, ensuring that their creations are both beautiful and safe for everyone.
These paper flowers are more than just decorations; they are a piece of Hue’s cultural heritage, passed down through generations. Despite the challenges, Thanh Tien’s paper flowers are still cherished, and with continued innovation and dedication, they will continue to thrive.

As you plan your winter trip to Hue, don’t miss the chance to visit this charming village, where the streets come alive with the vibrant colors of paper flowers. Embrace the history, artistry, and resilience that these flowers represent, and bring a piece of Thanh Tien’s legacy back home with you.
